Caring for Children and Young People

There are many factors that can impact on children and young people at different stages of their development. It is important to understand what these factors are, as well as the ways in which children and young people’s development can be enhanced through activity and interaction.

Throughout this qualification, you will explore how children’s development can be influenced by factors such as nutrition, and gain an understanding of the various safeguarding responsibilities of those who care for children and young people. You will also discover the importance of activities, play and interaction, and learn how to contribute positively to the development of children and young people at different stages.

In order to complete this course, you must be working at least 30 hours per week in a care setting and be in a supervisory or senior role. If you are not in a supervisory or senior role, your manager will need to facilitate you to demonstrate the competencies for a Level 3 qualification.

Should you experience any difficulties with your course, you will have the support of your Assessor and your Learner Support Advisor who can guide you through any part of your learning you may be struggling with.

The course is split into five manageable units. These are:

Unit 1: Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people

This unit will examine legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures for safeguarding the welfare of children and young people (including e-safety). This unit will also explain what action to take when children or young people are injured or ill, highlighting emergency procedures as well as how to respond to suspicions that a child or young person is been abused, harmed or bullied.

Unit 2: Importance of place for early learning

This unit will help you to understand the vital importance of creativity and imagination in the development of a child. This unit will provide knowledge of how to organise a cooking activity for children and understand the important role of creative activities in enhancing children’s learning and development, as well as the importance of books and stories in relation to children’s learning and development. Furthermore, this unit will help you understand the importance of talking and listening activities.

Unit 3: Use food and nutrition information to plan a healthy diet

Building an understanding of making good food and nutritional choices for children is at the core of this unit. You will develop skills in understanding food labelling and what to look out for to ensure that children are given a nutritious, balanced diet.

Unit 4: The value of play to young children

This unit will allow you to understand the necessity of play to young children’s development as well as demonstrating different play activities suitable for young children, from birth to five years.

Unit 5: Young children’s development

This unit will enable you to understand the stages of development of young children from birth to three years, alongside exploring how positive environments support the development of young children.
